DAC – Direct attach copper are copper cables with transceivers on each end, often used for short-range high-speed connections. Lengths are up to 7-meters.

ACC – Active copper cable. Similar to DAC, but utilizes signal amplification to achieve longer lengths.

AEC - Similar to DAC but utilizes signal amplification and re-clocking to achieve the longest lengths possible using copper cable.

AOC – Active Optical Cable. Using fiber instead of copper to support longer distances than is possible using copper cable. They have transceivers at both ends converting electrical signals to optical signals and back. Lengths of up to 100 meters are possible using this technology.

DAC – Short-range Data Center interconnects which are ideal for connecting servers, switches and storage devices in the same or adjacent racks.

AEC – Medium-range Data Center Connections which are too long for DACs, but more cost-effective than AOC’s.

AOC – Long-range Data Center Interconnects which are suitable for connecting devices across different rows across the data-center.

DAC cables are the most cost-effective solution for short connections, AEC cables fall between DAC and AOCs in cost and offer a good balance between performance and price, AOC cables are more expensive due to the cost of fiber and the use of active components necessary for supporting longer distances.

The wire size is inversely proportional to the number – IE the larger number equals smaller wire size. The length of the DAC determines which wire size is used. In other words, longer lengths require larger diameter wire (smaller AWG number) to provide optimal signal integrity.

PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)

  • Characteristics: PVC jackets are widely used because they are cost-effective and provide a good balance between durability and flexibility.
  • Applications: Common in environments where flame retardancy is not a critical requirement.
  • Pros: Economical, durable, and flexible for general use.
  • Cons: Less resistant to extreme temperatures or harsh environmental conditions compared to other types.

LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen)

  • Characteristics: LSZH jackets are designed to produce less smoke and no halogen gases when exposed to high temperatures or fire, making them safer for environments with strict fire safety standards.
  • Applications: Common in data centers, office buildings, and places where fire safety is a priority.
  • Pros: Safer in the event of a fire, with low smoke and no toxic fumes.
  • Cons: More expensive than PVC.

Mesh

  • Characteristics: The mesh jacket provides an additional layer of protection, making the cable more resilient against physical damage, abrasions, and cuts. This is particularly important in environments with heavy cable movement or potential exposure to harsh conditions.
  • Applications: Common in data centers where mesh jackets can help prevent kinks, bends, and tangles, which are common issues with traditional cable jackets, ensuring a longer lifespan and more reliable performance.
  • Pros: Mesh jackets are often more flexible than traditional PVC or rubber jackets, which makes it easier to route the cables through tight spaces in racks or cabinets. This flexibility aids in easier installation and management of cables in dense network environments. Mesh jackets allow for a tighter bend radius, which is beneficial in installations where space constraints require sharp bends without damaging the cable. This feature helps maintain the integrity and reliability of the connections.
  • Cons: Does not offer protection from heat and fire
